NEC Asia and Henderson Secondary School Vote for Lights Off for a Human-friendly Earth

Singapore, 30 March 2009 – NEC Asia, a wholly owned subsidiary of NEC Corporation joined the Earth Hour 2009 at the Esplanade Park carnival on Saturday, 28 March 2009 for the lights off countdown.

Along with its partnering school, Henderson Secondary School, the NEC Asia booth showcased the researches and studies conducted by the school’s students on environmental conservation.

Since 2006, NEC has sponsored and worked with Henderson Secondary School to raise environmental awareness in the students and to rouse their inquisitive minds. With funding from NEC and brainstorming and efforts from both the school’s teachers and students, a NECo Garden was launched in the school in 2006 to provide a natural aesthetic outlet for the students, promote a vibrant ecosystem and provide an organic measure to ward off dengue mosquitoes. The team from the school went on to spend two years exploring the possibility of alternative sources of energy to power the mini-waterfall in the NECo Garden and light up the NECo Garden during night celebratory activities and parties.

“Hendersonians have benefited through our partnership with NEC. By participating in authentic environmental projects, the students develop a stronger sense of belief in themselves and what they can do. The issues they researched on and examined also ingrained in them a deeper appreciation for the natural environment. This has encouraged them to take greater ownership and responsibility for the world they live in,” said Principal of Henderson Secondary School, Mr Simen Lourds.

“NEC aspires to help realize an informative society that is friendly to humans and earth. Voting for the lights-off switch today is just a simple gesture we can do as a good corporate citizens. In reality, we fight a daily war to reduce CO₂ emissions – both as an end user as well as an IT and network solutions provider. NEC has committed to cut energy-derived CO₂ emissions by 14,000 tons annually by FY 2011. We are seriously leveraging onto innovation to bring about energy-efficient products to our clients, as well as integrating innovative technologies to cut wastages and promote environmental conservation,” said Regional CEO of NEC Asia, Mr Kiyofumi Kusaka.

NEC corporate support for Earth Hour begins in 2007 when its Australian office participated in the first Earth Hour in Sydney. For NEC Asia, Earth Hour Singapore will be the first participation but its support for environmental conversation will continue thereafter.
