NEC companies amassed used stamps to benefit communities

SINGAPORE, 19 January 2010 – NEC group of companies in Singapore – NEC Asia, NEC Electronics Singapore, NEC Logistics Singapore, NEC Semiconductors Singapore and NEC Tokin Singapore – have collectively accumulated more than 1.9kg worth of used stamps in 2009, which will be sent to the non-profit organisation - "LIFE: Live with friends on the Earth" through NEC Corporation in Japan.

Through the activities of the "LIFE: Live with friends on the Earth", used stamps help to improve living conditions for Indian and Indonesian people. At the "LIFE: Live with friends on the Earth", the used stamps are first sorted into Japanese stamps, foreign stamps, and unused stamps, and these used stamps are carefully detached from the paper and dried. All the stamps are then sold to stamp collectors through Internet-based auctions.

Through this act of recycling and collecting used stamps, NEC aims to save the environment through recycling, and raise funds to help the underprivileged. An estimated 200g of stamps can pay one-month’s salary for a teacher who teaches a supplementary class in the "Integrated Development Project for Women and Children" in India.

NEC and its companies worldwide have been collecting used stamps since 1999 and till date, have collected more than 772kg of used stamps. More than 80 NEC companies (within and outside of Japan) from about 30 countries have been supporting this annual programme.

As part of NEC’s global corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, NEC companies and its employees worldwide strive to continue to “make a difference” to the Nature (environment), Education or Community in the respective country they operate in. Since 2007, NEC group of companies and their staff in Singapore have planted more than 100 trees in Southern Ridges at Telok Blangah Hill Park, planted 100 mangrove saplings in Pasir Ris Park in 2008, and cleaned up the same mangrove habitat in June and December in 2009.
