NEC’s Energy Saving Server, ECO CENTER, Deployed in NTT Com Asia’s New Hong Kong Data Center

Tokyo, March 18, 2009 - NEC Corporation today announced that NTT Com Asia Limited (NTT CA), a Hong Kong based subsidiary of NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), will deploy NEC’s Express5800/ECO CENTER (*1) in order to reduce the energy consumption of its Hong Kong data center.

NTT CA offers a full range of services, not only for local enterprises, but for companies operating in Asia as well. In April 2009, NTT CA plans to roll out new Virtual Office Hosting Services, built on a solid foundation of NEC’s ECO CENTER, and provide its Asian customers with secure access to virtualized server resources at any time or any location.

The energy saving server, customized for use in NTT CA’s Hong Kong data center, contains 30 servers, or 120 cores, and supports virtualization software, including VMware(R) ESX 3.5 (*2), and realizes a substantial reduction in power consumption by optimally allocating application tasks according to operational loads.

While striving to further reduce the power consumption in its data center, NTT CA hopes to provide new service offerings using virtualization technologies. Based on NEC’s experience and expertise in developing energy saving and virtualization technologies, ECO CENTER is the perfect solution to accommodate customer needs.

NEC aims to capitalize on its success in Hong Kong by marketing ECO CENTER worldwide, and seeking to achieve a sales goal of 500 units over the coming three years.

Furthermore, in consideration of the opportunities presented by cloud computing, NEC delivers the Express5800 series of servers covering two primary areas: 1. Consolidated computing environments, such as data centers attempting to tackle power and heat issues, and 2. Multi-site computing environments including remote branches looking for space-saving systems with superior customization.
