NEC Wins Femto Forum Award for Femtocell Network Element Design and Technology InnovationFemto Forum awards NEC for second year running

London, June 24, 2010 - NEC Corporation (NEC) announced today that it has won the Femto Forum Award "Femocell Network Design and Technology Innovation" for NEC's FemtoShare and FemtoCloud solutions - NEC's innovative Shared Radio Access Network Gateway (RAN-GW) and Managed Services enabling network sharing of femtocell infrastructure deployments.

All investments in mobile network infrastructure are highly scrutinised in the current financial climate and as much as investment in femtocell technology is by now a well-established business case, operators still look for an added element to the solution capabilities and cost efficiencies. NEC is the first vendor to deliver to market a viable femtocell network sharing solution that allows multiple connections from operator core networks into a single RAN Gateway. NEC's Shared RANGW (FemtoShare) reduces the barrier to market entry and continues to deliver scalability into the future.

"No different than in their macro-cell networks, operators are looking for ways to keep the cost of deploying a femtocell in check. While there was no shortage of impressive network innovations submitted for this year's awards, NEC's focus on costs combined with standards and scalability - particularly as operators look to launch services across markets - helped its FemtoShare and FemtoCloud offers to stand apart" commented William Webb, Director of Technology Resources, Ofcom, on behalf of the judging panel.

This is the second consecutive year that the Femto Forum has recognized NEC with one of its Awards. The Femto Forum Awards recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions made by companies in the evolution of the femtocell industry.

"NEC continues to be at the forefront of femtocell technology, including introducing femtocell to larger, communal access environments such as airports and enterprises," said Anil Kohli, General Manager Femtocell Solutions, NEC Europe. "From airports to public buildings to challenging radio environments, NEC is providing mobile operators with carrier-grade, plug and play femtocell solutions they can offer to their subscribers."

The judging panel consisted of Prof. William Webb, Director of Technology Resources, Ofcom; Dean Bubley, Director, Disruptive Analysis; Michelle Donegan, European Editor, Light Reading Mobile; Caroline Gabriel, Research Director, Rethink Technology Research; Steve Hartley, Principal Analyst, Ovum; Peter Jarich - Service Director, Current Analysis; Aditya Kaul, Practice Director, Mobile Networks, ABI Research; Mike Roberts, Principal Analyst, Informa, Sam Samra, Senior Director, Technical Programs, CDMA Development Group; Adrian Scrase, Secretary / CTO, 3GPP.
